Oh Brother!!

I'm sitting here on my couch with my puppy by my side, watching my daughter play with her toys on the floor, and listening to my husband cuss at the military style "shoot 'em up" video game that he is apparently loosing at. (He only plays a few weeks a year so that is understandable.) I'm thinking that every night I get to kiss my family good night and I get to tuck my daughter into bed.

And why is that you ask? Why do I get to do these things every night? Because of people who are unselfish, dedicated and supportive. People who sign a contract giving themselves and their family up to the needs and wants of the US military. Once you sign that contract, no matter how long you serve, what your duties are, you are the reason that our country is free. We may not be in the best shape, but we're free to do what we want (within reason of course!).

I'm proud to say that I'm a military grand-daughter and sister. My grandfather served on a destroyer, the USS Bush, during WWII. Obviously that is WAY before my time, but the friends he made while on the ship stuck with him for the rest of his life. My little brother is currently serving in the US Army. He has done 1 tour in Iraq during 2005-2006 and is now a recruiter in California. After spending a year in Iraq, he realized how important his family is to him and decided that he didn't want to go back. As a recruiter, he is home every night and day.

I'm going to be selfish now.... I for one am glad that he won't be going back. It has been hard on me, as his sister, to have him gone. First a year in Iraq and now the last 4 years in California... You see, we come from a very close family. We weren't the best of friends growing up, but as we got older and out of high school, we became very close. And even more so since he got married in 2003 and he and his wife, who just happens to be my very best friend, had their daughter. Now that I'm married and my husband and I have our first child, we are all looking forward to them moving home. I'm super excited to finally have them home to stay.

I'm really glad that my brother decided to join the army. It did him some good and got him pointed in the right direction. I wouldn't change a thing but I'm glad his time is almost up.
